Primordial Pendant

This pendant was created from a large hand cut Dinosaur Bone cabochon, and a smaller Labradorite cabochon that was cut across the crystal gain so that it created pinfire that dances across the stone. A carved silver rim encircles the two cabochons, further contrasting the play of positive and negative space across the piece.
People often ask, “Is this real dinosaur bone?” when they first see one of my dino bone pieces. The answer to this, of course, is a resounding yes. This is the fossilized remains of a prehistoric animal. Deciphering which dinosaur in particular the bone came from is a bit more difficult. Very rarely will a complete a bone fossilize in a manner that can be cut into gemstone, thus making it much harder to identify the exact creature from which the bone fragments came.
When you take into consideration that by some estimates the chances for any given creature to become fossilized in the first place is in the neighborhood of 1 in 42,000,000, and even fewer contain the minerals needed for a fossilized bone to take on the desired hardness and colors; only a very small percentage of all fossils are of a caliber to be cut into gemstones. This makes dinosaur bone hundreds of times rarer than diamonds. So rare, in fact, that to date there is no mass production of dinosaur bone cabochons, so each stone must be painstakingly hand cut. Which is why it never appears in big box jewelry stores, and can only be found in handmade jewelry. Pretty cool, huh?
