Alexandrite

Alexandrite is an extremely rare form of dichromatic chrysoberyl. The color shift can be quite dramatic appearing as blue as a aquamarine in one light, but as brilliant purple as an amethyst under another. It is named after Czar Alexander II.

There is no traditional folklore regarding this amazing stone because it was only discovered in the 1830s, in the Ural Mountains in Russia. It is so rare that very few people are familiar with it even today, and even fewer have ever seen a natural stone. The vast majority of “alexandrite” on the market is lab created dichromatic corundum.

Historically it could only be found in Russia, however in the past few decades deposits have been found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and India.
