Coral
|
Coral is the exoskeleton of a tiny sea creature called a polyp. In terms of gems coral usually refers to the red branching variety, and is one of the four organic gems. It was also prized as an amulet toward off the evil eye and other misfortunes. Ground coral was common in early European and Aegean folk medicine.
Albertus Magus claimed that the red coral could stop hemorrhaging, protect from sorcery and madness, and bestow wisdom upon the wearer.
The traditional coral amulet is created by attaching a gold or silver cap to a branch of red coral and wearing it around the neck. In many parts of the Aegean the coral amulet is prized for the belief that it renders the wearer immune to witchcraft, misfortune, evil spirits, and treachery.
Coral is the traditional material for the figa amulet.
