The lingam stones most people are familiar with is a carved jasper form the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is unknown if this is same material lapidaries such as Kunz were referring to when they mention the shiva lingam because the lingam is traditionally carved from many different materials. These jasper lingams are exported in mass to the west, and so many mistakenly believe that the word lingam refers to the type jasper rather than the shape.
