Amuletic Stones of the Zodiac
The original use of astrological gemstones was in amulets meant to attract and enhance the positive attributes of the zodiac signs. An individual would have a collection of jewelry with pieces set with stones from each of the twelve houses. They would then wear the jewelry with the stone that matched the astrological phase in which they were in currently.
Needless to say, this was a practice limited to the wealthy. If no other jewelry could be afforded a person would seek to own a piece of jewelry set with the stone associated with their sun sign. This was a way to ensure good fortune year round, but especially so once the sun entered the house of your birth.
