Elemental Modality of the Zodiac
The houses of the zodiac are divided into four elemental categories, which are then farther divided by modality within those elements.
Contrary to popular belief these divisions are largely arbitrary. Rather than being based on any inherent property of a specific sign, the modalities were assigned to the houses in order of appearance in the zodiac beginning with Aries. When the signs are arranged in four rows of three each column represents a different modality.
