There is something pleasing about the contrast of the green paint of this building and the vintage architecture. Like many places in the 90s the front of the building had received a metallic facelift, but they thankfully left the extraordinary examples of classical folk art on the side untouched. These murals were one of the exciting surprises I encountered on my journey through this unique city.
Cristy Dunn, proprietress of the Art Center, tells me that these are the work of the local high school students in the 1980s. This only farther demonstrates how deeply art and music flow through the culture of this region. I tried to photograph as many as possible. These are now almost a half a century old, and sometimes such heartfelt artistic expressions do not survive the test of time and progress.
