The Mountain City Senior Center provides much needed community interaction for Johnson County’s more experienced residents. They offer Fitness classes designed to help with varying levels of dexterity and skill. A place to socialize while doing arts and crafts, as well as how to sessions. They have game and music rooms and try to encourage activities that enhance cognitive skills and quality of life.

But their focus on seniors does not stop at their front doors. The Center also houses outreach programs, has a pen pal program, facilitate visits to nursing homes, and are the primary hub for the local Meals on Wheels program. In order to assist people who do not drive they created a local chapter of MyRide so that they services could be extended to even the more remote parts of the county.

But perhaps one of their most interesting innovations is the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. This program makes use of a much overlooked community resource, retired folks. This program encourages retirees to put their experience to work in their communities. They help with local distribution programs, to volunteer work, and assist others who may be less mobile than themselves. In essence they become the lifeline to the heart of the community.
