The First Sunrise

Artist: Cristy Dunn
Installation: 2016

Location: 301 W Main St, Mountain City, TN 37683. At the intersection of Main and Murphy. On the South East side of side facing Murphy.

This Mural was created to honor the musicians who helped bring Bluegrass and folk music to a national audience. Doc Watson, Fred Price, and Clint Howard made several recordings together, many of which have become part of the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The trio were also featured multiple times on the national television show Rainbow Quest. One of those recordings, The Ballard of Finley Preston, was about the hanging of a local murderer on the steps of the Old Courthouse in Mountain City.

This mural was created by Cristy Dunn, the granddaughter of Fred Price, to commemorate the preservation of traditional music by these great men and to honor them for passing it on to future generations. In the forefront are pictured Fred Price and Clint Howard with their sons Kenny Price and Clarence Howard, and in the distance to the left is their neighbor Doc Watson. Their legacy of preservation and teaching is carried on today by Johnson County’s own Junior Appalachian Musicians, a non profit dedicated to preserving the music and culture of the region.
